Netbooks are the latest phenomena in the computing world offering extremely portable and user friendly mini devices that can carry on certain functions well. However, the functionalities and features in a netbook are limited to a certain extend. Professionals cannot perform the same multimedia taks on netbooks that they do on laptops. Therefore, it gets extremely important to differentiate between a netbook and laptops before one opts for a netbook.
Netbooks are mini computers that are best for communication and light documentation purposes. This is the mere reason of why companies felt the need of introducing netbooks. With the increasing number of people opting for laptops only for the purpose of communicating made it quite obvious that 50% of the laptop users use them for communication. Hence, the concept of netbooks was introduced giving birth to a device that is portable and effective.
Main purpose of netbooks:
As netbooks are still an emerging concept, no one can predict whether they will be able to take the place of laptops or not. However, today most of the average netbooks are designed for basic functionalities such as browsing, documentation to a limited extent, communicating and the like. Whereas on the other hand, laptops can take on much tougher task such as running heavy software, gaming, multi functioning, etc.
Hard drive and storage capacities:
Hard drives in laptops can range from 20 Gb to 320 Gb and more but in netbooks you will find the hard drive being limited to 10 GB and a maximum of 20 GB. Some latest versions of netbooks might offer bigger hard drives but most of them are limited within 20 GB. Not only this, RAMs in laptops, especially the newer versions that come with Intel Core 2 Duo processors have more than 2 GB of RAMs giving you the option of installing any type of operating system you wish to. However, in the case of netbooks you are restricted to one operating system that usually comes pre installed and can’t be changed. Even if you try to upgrade your netbook’s operating system it can’t be done on the average netbooks as the memory capacity does not allow it.
Operating Systems:
Most of the netbooks work with DOS operating system which is a way lighter operating system compared to windows vista, windows 7 or any other professional version of windows or Linux. DOS is actually an operating system that was designed by Microsoft to be user friendly and limited to a certain extent. So for a person looking for a multifunctional machine, netbooks don’t do well.
Portability:
The basic aim of netbooks is to provide consumers with a much portable machine compared to laptops that can undertake the routine tasks of an average person. As already said, netbooks are limited to certain features which are a turn off for many techy people but on the other hand this factor gives them the reason to be highly portable and mobile. Netbooks are smaller in size, lighter in weight and usually have a better battery life then laptops.
So before you opt for a netbook make sure to list down your requirements and if they are suiting well with the idea of netbooks then sure go for it but remember your performance on a netbook would be limited.
